I have performed and recorded in ensembles playing a variety of music - rock, pop, indie, metal, jazz, soul, blues, punk, avant-noise, folk, funk, Americana, classical, ska, country and more. My primary instrument is guitar, but I also sing, play bass, keyboards, accordion, and drums. I have toured the US and Europe playing music as both a band member and a hired gun. I am a multi-instrumentalist, having studied music at Sarah Lawrence College and summer programs at Berklee College of Music. That said, if you like it loud, I will make it loud. I am not dogmatic about loudness - generally I try to master music to the loudness that it feels the music dictates, and I avoid participating in the loudness wars. Similar to mixing, I use a variety of analog and digital tools to get the music where it needs to be.

I enjoy being the final set of ears in the recording process - it is satisfying to take a record over the finish line to being a complete releasable piece of music.

I am multi-lingual in Pro Tools and Logic, and sometimes use Ableton Live. I use analog equipment from API, Manley, Neve, Universal Audio, Empirical Labs, Fostex, DBX, Tascam and more, and have a large selection of digital plugins by Universal Audio, Brainworx, FabFilter, Soundtoys, Izotope and more. I employ digital and analog tools as necessary to achieve the sonic goal. I pay close attention to building a mix foundation with a structure of parallel compression and ambience busses, that allow the music to become as big as it needs to be, while still being able to feel natural and breathe. Mixing is one of my favorite parts of the process, as it allows the vision of the recording to come into focus and become larger than the sum of its parts. It’s always helpful to discuss beforehand what role is best suited to your project. I’m happy filling either role, or anywhere in between. Other times I am a transparent engineer, operating to simply capture the artistic intent as it was conceived before my participation, without offering creative feedback. Sometimes I am a producer, recording and also helping make artistic choices and giving feedback on performances, arrangement ideas, note choices, lyrics, and sometimes playing instruments. My role when recording music depends on what is best suited to the project. The music tells the recordist what it needs, and I aim to capture music in a way that appropriately translates the artistic intent.

I am equally at home putting up 24 mics on a single drum kit to get a big modern sound as I am putting up a single ribbon mic to capture an entire ensemble. I employ a wide variety of techniques to capture performances in ways that are appropriate to the style of music being played. One of the most satisfying things as a sound engineer is capturing a musician as they are delivering a killer take. We have a large mic locker and collection of analog recording equipment, as well as a wide array of vintage and contemporary instruments. Come visit us! We have two spacious and comfortable mixing/tracking rooms and a comfortable isolation booth.
